Our very last setting option for the nine patch quilt is SIMPLE PIECED SASHING. There are hundreds of other options to explore, but this was intended to be a simple summer project, so let's not get too complicated! I do have to say that I am really looking forward to seeing photos of your finished quilt (or quilt top!) so please post them to the facebook page or email them to me at mailto:karen@thequiltcompany.com and I will post them for you.
Feel free to comment, make suggestions and let me know if you are interested in starting another project. We have momentum - why not keep going!
I think this simple sashing idea is the one that I will select for my finished blocks. I haven't decided on what color the sashing will be, although I have pondered the idea of colorwashing the blocks so that they shade across the quilt and doing the same with the sashing - in the opposite direction...... there I go complicating things again....
Before you select the fabrics for the cornerstones for your project, you need to decide if you want them cut from one piece of fabric or if you want them scrappy. Scrappy seems logical, especially if you, like me, cut WAY too many squares for your nine patches to begin with! But I do like the look of that constant periwinkle with those green blocks - it is so hard to decide!
SUPER SIMPLE SASHING
66" BY 82"
Materials
80 nine patch blocks
2 1/4 yards of sashing fabric
1/2 yard of cornerstone fabric (or 99 leftover squares)
2/3 yard of binding
5 yards of backing (you may be able to run the backing the opposite direction and use less fabric, but your fabric would have to be at least 44" wide after washing, with selvedge edges removed)
Cutting Instructions
From the sashing fabric cut:
30 strips 2 1/2" by the width of the fabric, cross cut these into 178 rectangles measuring 2 1/2" by 6 1/2"
From the cornerstone fabric cut:
7 strips 2 1/2", cross cut these into 99 squares measuring 2 1/2"
From the binding fabric cut:
8 strips 2 1/4" by the width of the fabric
Instructions
1. Arrange the nine patch blocks in 10 rows of 8 blocks each, inserting one sashing strip between each block. Press all seams toward the sashing strip. Each row should begin and end with a sashing strip.
2. Construct the sashing strips for between the rows by stitching together 8 sashing strips and 9 cornerstones for each row. The rows should start and end with a cornerstone. Press all seams toward the sashing strips. Make 11 rows.
3. Stitch the rows together to form the completed quilt top. Press.
Then add borders if you like and 'quilt as desired".
Is that enough inspiration to finish your project? Could you use a little more encouragement? Post a comment here on the blog about how you plan to finish your quilt between now and August 31st and I will select a winner from the comments and award a beautiful fat quarter pack of batiks! The winner is determined by random number generator, so everyone has an equal chance to win, but you have to sign your post to be eligible for the prize - I can't send a package to "anonymous"! You don't have to have your quilt finished to post a comment, just let us know how many blocks you have made or how you plan to finish your quilt. I can't wait to hear from you!

I have 80 blocks made and I'm planning to set them on point but arranged so that 5 blocks make an "X"....I saw a 9-patch quilt on another blog a couple weeks ago and when I saw it a said "ohhh nice!" I haven't picked the setting fabric yet tho'
I've done 41 blocks so far, and I think I am going to quit while I'm ahead! I just figured out that I will need exactly 41 blocks if I set them diagonally, with 5 blocks in one row and 4 in the next. Since I stated with 3 inch squares, my blocks will finish at 7.5 inches. If my knowlege of basic geometry hasn't failed me, that means my finished quilt without borders would be about 53 X 95 or a decent twin size. And yes, let's keep going! This has been a lot of fun!
I have 150 6" blocks done and had to quit.... I could of keep on going. I'm planning on using the sashing and corner stones method.... the problem is what color to use for my sashing the quilt is very scrappy probably a white, I plan on using the left over blocks for a border. And yes let's do something else this was fun. I have plenty of charm packs!
OOPS! My earlier post contained what my daughter calls an "epic fail"! Since the blocks are on the diagonal, the rows with 4 blocks are nested inside two 5 block rows, so they aren't counted in the final dimensions. So much for my basic geometry, LOL! If I stop with 41 blocks, and set them diagonally, my finished quilt without borders will only be 53 inches square. Hmmm, maybe I'll keep going.....
So far, I have 75 blocks made but will make it to the 80 so that I can finish a decent size quilt. It will be for my grandson's 6th birthday (Jan 10th) so it's very bright. I asked him what his 3 favorite colors are: green, orange and yellow. I'm thinking of sashing with dark blue or green. This is my first quilt and it's way more complicated (the color planning and geometry) than I ever thought it would be. Gotta hand it to you quilters, I'm humbled. I will NOT be quilting this as a Quilters Workshop opened here that will long arm quilt for you, for a price. I'm all over that! It has been fun though. I won't be continuing as I have tons of stitching projects to do.
Although I'm a lover of the scrappy look, I LOVE the periwinkle!
I have to agree the periwinkle really stands out as a favorite, it feels peacefull.
Love this project! And your block setting. Thanks!
I'll leave a comment, as I'd LOVE to win! I have my blocks done, and am design wall-ing them now, deciding what setting to use. I think they're pretty, and am grateful you pushed me to this project!
I made 92 blocks I think I might make smaller quilts to give away.
Thanks
Regena
I have my blocks made. They are VERY scrappy. I have pieced 2 charity quilts for our guild so far. It was a great motivator.
I have 80 blocks done. I have decided to do a double 9 patch, adding 20 6" blocks from a BOM I did a number of years ago. I used 30's fabrics and need it to be a full size for my granddaughters bed. I have used KONA white in all the blocks and will continue that in the double 9's. I am planning on doing a piano key border (I still have plenty of 30's fabric in my stash!!!)
I have made 412 blocks so far, I guess I got carried away. It's really helped me become a better at piecing. I thank you for that, Karen! Thanks, too, for the motivation!
I used Kona Snow in each block so I will make that Irish Chain I've always wanted. The extra blocks will go into quilts for the local woman's shelter.

OMG - I didn't realize you were "THAT" Karen!! I love your stuff. I just did a shop sample of the Kashmir (it turned out awesome) and I have the dessert nine patch just waiting for a long weekend!
I have made 72 blocks, and have just 9 more to make! I've been sewing 9 blocks together to make a large 9 patch. Then I'm sewing sashing in between these large 9 patches. Once the quilt is all done, it will be donated to a local foster kid graduating from high school. This was a great summer project!
I am making a lap quilt because I am fairly new to quilting. I thought a twin or larger was a bit much for me right now. I can't wait to see everyone's quilts!
I have made 72 blocks and want to have the quilt 8 x 9 blocks but haven't decided on how to lay them out. I have a piece of fabric for sashing that I love but really want to do some squares and corner blocks. It's time to lay them all out somewhere and see how it looks. Thanks for the fun project. My scrap pile really did shrink a bit.
I have some catching up to do since I took last week off to make a birthday gift for my aunt but I have been thinking about the way I want to sash it.
I would love another project, although I have fallen behind on this one and need to finish before starting anew. I also made some patches with 1.5 squares, so I need to think of some setting that will also use those. Thanks again for the inspiration!!
I have 80 blocks and plan on setting them on point (I already got the setting fabric). I can't wait to see the finished top.
I have all my blocks finished. I'm just stumped wit the how to square them up part!
Hi Karen, Thank you for hosting the 9 Patch project, I've made 63 blocks and plan to set them on point with black fabric. My blocks are very scrappy, many different fabrics, I really used my scraps from my stash!
I really wanted to have the 75 done but a wedding and first grandchild have consumed my time this summer!
I've made 69 blocks so far though I gotta admit the last 20 or so I did last Saturday to catch up! A few more blocks may be needed (fabrics already picked out) to complete a horizontal setting where the blocks alternate with light squares to make the quilt look like a single irish chain. My blocks were made from 2" squares so my blocks are 4 1/2" finished and the quilt should turn out to be lap-size. Those 9Patches, as small as mine are, go a LONG way! The quilt may not be finished by the end of August but I'm hoping it's done by the end of the year. By the way, I love your batik 9Patches! Thanks for the challenge, Karen!
Thank you so much for your postings..has encouraged me to complete a nine patch and the different ways to complete have been explained so clearly. appreciate all your time and help!
I love the idea of scrappy sashings with this quilt project. I'd also love to win the prize bundle!
I really love this challenge! During summer I've made 75 blocks X 2. Thanks for the block settings!
This is fun, and I look foreward to piecing the blocks together. Good luck everybody! :)
I have 80 some blocks made and am still thinking of how to set it up. I am leaning toward on point or sashing and cornerstones. I need to lay the blocks out and see what inspiration may hit. Can't wait to see all the finished projects.
I had bad surgery early in June, so needless to say, I am way behind. I only have about 10 blocks done, but I have a lot in various stages. I strip pieced a lot of scraps, mainly in shades of dark blue. When I finish some more blocks, I'll decide if I want to make a throw or a baby quilt. I really like the idea of putting a plain square between every 9 patch block, then doing some cool quilting. If not that one, I like using the sashing.
I'm going to do the simple sashing method. I'm going to take all the black fabric....solid and print...and continue the scrappy method and use it for sashing. When my Creaky Knees found out that I was doing this project, sandwich bags of scraps started showing up at my studio and I'm well on my way to several more scrappy quilts so I hope the next project we do can be made as scrappy. The cornerstones will be leftover 2 1/2" blocks, too....This will probably be one of my favorite quilts....scrappy quilts always tell a story! Thanks for this opportunity. I can't wait until the next project.
Hi Karen, I found a setting in an old quilt magazine that the 9aptches make centgers of stars, Having located 3 yards of cream batik in my stash and with the 60-ish random batik blocks I made, I'm going to give it a try.

I loved this project I did mine in brights Im probably going to put mine on point and get some polka dot fabric and mix it in or for the backing It will probably go to my grandauther!
Lets do this again maybe Christmas Fabrics!
Several friends of mine took some donated flannel, and used it to make the nine patches. The quilts will be donated through our quilt guild. There are at least 20 quilts so far. It even motivated others to sort through and find more flannels to add to the stash!
Congrats to Jean C, Cheryl B, Kathy Russell and Sandy J for their work.
The project inspired all of us this summer. Lets do it again next year!
